Sade

Sade is an English R&B band that formed in 1983. The band's music features elements of R&B, soul, jazz, funk and soft rock. The band is named after their British Nigerian lead vocalist, Sade Adu (born Helen Folasade Adu on January 16, 1959 in Ibadan, Nigeria). The members of the band are: Sade Adu (vocals), Stuart Matthewman (guitar and sax), Paul Spencer Denman (bass), and Andrew Hale (keyboards). They were all members --along with Paul Anthony Cook-- of the band Pride which formed in 1982. However, when Andrew Hale joined the band in 1983, Cook left the band afterwards in 1984. Due to the fact that Sade got more attention than Pride, the latter band broke up and Sade remained and signed a record contract with Portrait Records. All Sade albums were released through this label until it was absorbed by its parent label Epic Records in 1986. Sade's debut album, Diamond Life, went Top Ten in the U.K. in late 1984 and sold platinum. In 1986, Sade won a Grammy for Best New Artist. Sade's US certified sales so far stands at 23.5 million units according to RIAA, and has sold more than 50 million units worldwide to date.

Diamond Life was also highly successful in Germany, Switzerland and Austria, where it reached number one for nine, eight and five weeks, respectively. The album won the Brit Award for British Album in 1985. The album peaked at #2 in the U.K. (4 Platinum discs) and #5 in the U.S (4 Platinum discs). Color Me Cinnamon (2010)

Color Me Cinnamon is Stacey Q's fifth and so far last studio album, released on February 14, 2010 by Hydra Productions. On “Color Me Cinnamon,” Stacey Q takes listeners on a musical journey, assuming several personas throughout the album. She transforms from a woman of the night on “Candy Apple” to a wealthy French socialite who has every-thing money can buy but nothing she really want on “Sad Cafe.” Other standout tracks include the pulsating “Euphoria,” about achieving extreme content and fulfillment; the radio-friendly “Below the Surface,” about an extreme burning desire; “Masquerade,” about living behind a mask; and the retro-80s sounding “The Lion’s Den,” about the New York City party scene. The album title, “Color Me Cinnamon,” taps into a unique part of Stacey Q history. The title references the album title that was used on the popular 1987 episode of “The Facts of Life,” in which Stacey played the character Cinnamon, a bud-ding rock star. The acting role was specifically written for Stacey. The singles taken from this album were: Trip (released in 2009) and Pandora's Box.

Eurythmics/Annie Lennox

Eurythmics were a British pop rock duo, formed in 1980. Consisting of members Annie Lennox and David A. Stewart (both previously in the bands The Catch and The Tourists), the duo released their first album in 1981 to little fanfare, but went on to achieve global success with their second album Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This), released in 1983. The title track was a worldwide hit, topping the chart in various countries including the U.S.. Eurythmics went onto release a string of hit singles and albums before they split in 1990. By this time, Stewart had already embarked on a parallel music career and was also a sought-after record producer, while Lennox began a solo recording career in 1992 with her debut album Diva. After almost a decade apart, Eurythmics reformed in the late 1990s to record their eighth album, Peace which was released in late 1999. They reunited again in 2005 to release the single "I've Got a Life", as part of a new Eurythmics compilation album, Ultimate Collection.

In the Garden (1981)

In the Garden is Eurythmics' first studio album, released on October 16, 1981. It was co-produced with 'krautrock' producer Conny Plank, at his studio in Cologne, with numerous guest musicians. Plank had previously worked with the duo whilst they were in their previous band The Tourists. On November 14, 2005, Sony BMG repackaged and released Eurythmics' back catalog as "2005 Deluxe Edition Reissues". The re-issue of In the Garden added the B-sides from the album's two singles, plus three tracks recorded live on the accompanying tour. The album didn't make it to charts. Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This) (1983)

Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This) is Eurythmics' second studio album, released on January 21, 1983. Sweet Dreams saw the duo move away from the psychedelic, guitar-tinged band-orientated sound of their 1981 debut album In the Garden, instead focusing on raw analogue synthesizers (including the Oberheim OB1 and EDP Wasp) and drum machines (particularly the Movement Systems Drum Computer, which featured a graphic visual display of the drum patterns). Whilst the "synth pop" genre had grown in popularity in the preceding years, it was often associated with all male groups and somewhat clinical, emotionless music. Eurythmics (particularly with Lennox's vocal stylings) brought a soul music twist to the electronic sound, which proved popular with broader audiences. On November 14, 2005, Sony BMG repackaged and released Eurythmics' back catalog as "2005 Deluxe Edition Reissues". The album charted to #3 in the U.K. (Platinum disc) and #15 in the U.S. (Gold disc). The singles taken from this album were: This Is the House, The Walk, Love Is a Stranger (#54 U.K. 1982 release, #6 U.K. 1983 release, #23 U.S.), and Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This) (#2 U.K., #1 U.S.).

Touch (1983)

Touch is Eurythmics' third studio album, released on November 26, 1983. By this time, the duo had achieved international success with their hit single "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)." The follow-up, Touch, was reputedly recorded and mixed in only about three weeks at Eurythmics' own London studio facility, The Church. In addition, Touch was also the first album to be released simultaneously on record and on the then-new CD format in the United States. In 2003, the album was ranked number 500 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. On November 14, 2005, SonyBMG repackaged and released Eurythmics' back catalog as "2005 Deluxe Edition Reissues." Each of their eight studio albums' original track listings were supplemented with bonus tracks and remixes. The album charted to #1 in the U.K. (Platinum disc) and #7 in the U.S. (Platinum disc). 1984 (For the Love of Big Brother) (1984)

1984 (For the Love of Big Brother) is a soundtrack album for the movie 1984 based on George Orwell's famous novel, released on November 24, 1984. Lennox and Stewart worked as a duo for these recordings, with no contribution from other musicians. The music, whilst containing many electronic elements, was far from being "synth pop"; Stewart described some tracks as being like "Kraftwerk meets African tribal meets Booker T and the MGs." Unknown to the group, Radford had commissioned his own orchestral score, and was not fond of Eurythmics' work. Two versions of the film were released, one featuring Eurythmics' music, and the "director's cut", which replaced most of Eurythmics' music by the orchestral score. When accepting an award for the film, Radford publicly complained of having Eurythmics' music "foisted" on him. Eurythmics issued a statement that they had accepted Virgin's commission in good faith, and would never have done so if they had known that it was not being done with the director's approval. The album charted to #23 in the U.K. (Gold disc) and #93 in the U.S. The singles taken from this album were: Sexcrime (Nineteen Eighty-Four) (#4 U.K., #81 U.S.) and Julia (#44 U.K.).

Be Yourself Tonight (1985)

Be Yourself Tonight is Eurythmics' fifth studio album, released on May 11, 1985. This album saw Eurythmics move away from their previous more experimental, synthesizer-based songs, to a more commercial pop/rock sound, incorporating a more traditional band line-up/instrumentation. Nonetheless, the recordings still possessed an atmospheric and cutting edge sound, winning Stewart awards for his production work on the album. The release of the album also coincided with a new look for singer Annie Lennox, who ditched the androgynous look of the previous albums and became, in biographer Lucy O'Brien's words, "a bleach-blonde rock 'n' roller." On November 14, 2005, SonyBMG repackaged and released Eurythmics' back catalog as "2005 Deluxe Edition Reissues." The album charted to #3 in the U.K. (2 Platinum discs) and #9 in the U.S. (Platinum disc). The singles taken from this album were: Would I Lie to You? Revenge (1986)

Revenge is Eurythmics' sixth studio album, released on July 12, 1986. Following on from their previous album, Be Yourself Tonight, Revenge continued further in this direction as the duo embraced a more commercial "rock band" style. The album included several hit singles and was a commercial success. Its release was followed by an extensive world tour. A 1987 concert from the Australian leg of this tour was also released on home video. On November 14, 2005, SonyBMG repackaged and released Eurythmics' back catalog as "2005 Deluxe Edition Reissues." Each of their eight studio albums' original track listings were supplemented with bonus tracks and remixes. The album charted to #3 in the U.K. (2 Platinum discs) and #12 in the U.S. (Gold disc). Savage (1987)

Savage is Eurythmics' seventh studio album, released on November 9, 1987. Following the much more mainstream commercial content of their previous two albums, Savage saw Eurythmics "turn sharp left" (as Stewart put it), with a much more experimental sound. Production-wise, the album made heavy use of the NED Synclavier digital sampling keyboard. The only other musician working on the recordings with Stewart and Lennox was drummer Olle Romo, who handled much of the Synclavier programming. Lennox brought more of a feminist focus to her lyrics which was made more evident by the accompanying video album, which featured a video for each song. On November 14, 2005, SonyBMG repackaged and released Eurythmics' back catalog as "2005 Deluxe Edition Reissues." Each of their eight studio albums' original track listings were supplemented with bonus tracks and remixes. The album charted at #7 in the U.K. (Platinum disc) and #41 in the U.S. The singles taken from this album were: Beethoven (I Love to Listen to) (#25 U.K.), Shame (#41 U.K.), I Need a Man (#26 U.K., #46 U.S.), and You Have Placed a Chill in My Heart (#16 U.K., #64 U.S.).

Live 1983-1989 (1993)

Live 1983-1989 is a collection of live performances by the British pop duo Eurythmics, recorded throughout the 1980s. This was released on November, 1993. The collection is spread across two discs, encompassing the years of their greatest commercial success. The songs are presented chronologically, and the performances also hew to the material released near the time of recordings: tracks from 1983 such as "Love Is a Stranger" and "Who's That Girl?" are culled from 1983 concerts and sound very similar to their studio-recorded versions despite the availability of later performances in which the songs are performed in an acoustic style or with a rock band. A limited three-disc version provides the exception. The third disc contains six songs drawn from a short acoustic set performed during the Revival Tour from 1989. Songs such as 1983's "Here Comes the Rain Again" and "Right By Your Side" are included along with more recent fare, "You Have Placed a Chill in My Heart".

Peace (1999)

Peace is Eurythmics' ninth and last studio album, released on October 18, 1999. It was the band's first album of new material in 10 years, following 1989's We Too Are One. Following their first performance together in eight years at a record company party in 1998, David A. Stewart and Annie Lennox began writing and recording together for the first time since 1989. The title was designed to reflect the duo's ongoing concern with global conflict and world peace. The record was promoted with a concert on the Greenpeace vessel Rainbow Warrior II, where they played a mixture of old and new songs. A 24-date world tour (entitled the "Peacetour") followed soon after, with all profits donated to Amnesty International and Greenpeace. The final show of the tour, on 6th December 1999 at the London Docklands Arena, was filmed and released on video and DVD. The album charted to #4 in the U.K. (Gold disc) and #25 in the U.S. (Gold disc). The singles taken from this album were: I Saved the World Today (#11 U.K.), 17 Again (#27 U.K.), Peace Is Just a Word and Power to the Meek. On 14 November 2005, SonyBMG repackaged and released Eurythmics' back catalog as "Deluxe Edition Reissues". Each of their eight studio albums' original track listings were supplemented with bonus tracks and remixes.

Annie Lennox

Ann Griselda Lennox was born on December 25, 1954 in Aberdeen, Scotland. She is a Scottish recording artist and songwriter. After achieving minor success in the band The Tourists in the late 1970s, Lennox went on to major international success in the 1980s as part of the duo Eurythmics, which she formed with former Tourists' member David A. Stewart. In the 1990s, Lennox embarked on a solo career beginning with her debut album Diva (1992), which produced several hit singles including "Why" and "Walking on Broken Glass". She has released five solo studio albums and a compilation album, The Annie Lennox Collection, in 2009. She is the recipient of eight BRIT Awards, more than any other female artist. In 2004, she won both the Golden Globe and the Academy Award for Best Original Song for "Into the West", written for the soundtrack to the feature film The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. In addition to her career as a musician, Lennox is also a political and social activist, notable for raising money and awareness for HIV charities in Africa. She also objected to the unauthorized use of the 1999 Eurythmics song "I Saved the World Today" in an election broadcast for Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni. Known as a pop culture icon for her distinctive contralto vocals and visual performances, Lennox has been named "The Greatest White Soul Singer Alive" by VH1 and one of The 100 Greatest Singers of All Time by Rolling Stone. She has earned the distinction of "most successful female British artist in UK music history" because of her global commercial success since the early 1980s. Including her work within Eurythmics, Lennox is one of the world's best-selling music artists, having sold over 80 million records worldwide.

The Waitresses

The Waitresses was an experimental New Wave band from Akron, Ohio. The group was led by guitarist/songwriter Chris Butler with lead vocals performed by Patty Donahue. They were best known in the UK for the song "Christmas Wrapping", which still gets airtime on the radio every Christmas. In the USA they had minor success with the song "I Know What Boys Like," from their 1982 debut album Wasn't Tomorrow Wonderful. "I Know What Boys Like" was originally released as a single in 1980 but did not chart. In 1982 the song peaked at #62 on the Billboard Hot 100, #23 on Billboard's Top Tracks chart and #14 on the Australian Singles Chart (Kent Music Report). The Waitresses also recorded the theme song to the television program Square Pegs which aired during the 1982–1983 season. Their new wave Christmas song "Christmas Wrapping" was originally released on the ZE Records album A Christmas Record in 1981, and became a #45 hit in the United Kingdom in 1982. The song was subsequently covered by the Spice Girls in 1998, as the B-side of their single "Goodbye". Butler's diverse musical interests are apparent from the use of prepared piano on "No Guilt," microtonal background vocals on the chorus of "Wise Up," tape loops and short wave receiver on "Jimmy Tomorrow," and the title of "Make the Weather" (taken from Hugo Ball's autobiography Flight Out of Time). Saxophonist and reed player Mars Williams had also worked as Anthony Braxton's copyist. The band's lead singer Patty Donahue left in summer 1984 and was briefly replaced by Holly Beth Vincent. Vincent left the band two weeks later, and Donahue later came back. The band finally split up in late 1984 after the departures of Carney and Klayman. After the group's break up, talks of reunions took place. However, in 1996 lead singer Patty Donahue died of lung cancer at age 40 so the idea of reuniting came to an end.

Wasn't Tomorrow Wonderful? (1982)

Wasn't Tomorrow Wonderful? is The Waitresses' debut album, released on January 11, 1982 originally on ZE Records and subsequently licensed by Polydor. The album peaked at # 41 in the Billboard chart and included the earlier single "I Know What Boys Like." Band Aid

Do They Know It's Christmas?" is a song written by Bob Geldof and Midge Ure in 1984 to raise money for relief of the 1984–1985 famine in Ethiopia. The original version was produced by Midge Ure and released by Band Aid on 29 November 1984. In late 1984, a BBC report by Michael Buerk was aired highlighting the famine that had hit the people of Ethiopia. Irish singer Bob Geldof saw the report and wanted to raise money. He called Midge Ure from Ultravox and together they quickly co-wrote the song, "Do They Know It's Christmas?". Geldof kept a November appointment with BBC Radio 1 DJ Richard Skinner to appear on his show, but instead of discussing his new album (the original reason for his booking), he used his airtime to publicise the idea for the charity single, so by the time the musicians were recruited there was intense media interest in the subject. Geldof put together a group called Band Aid, consisting of leading Irish and British musicians who were among the most popular of the era. The 1984 original became the biggest selling single in UK singles chart history, selling a million copies in the first week alone. It stayed at Number 1 for five weeks, becoming Christmas number one, and sold more than 3.5 million copies domestically. It remained the highest selling single in UK chart history until 1997, when Elton John's "Candle in the Wind 1997" was released in tribute to the late Diana, Princess of Wales, which sold almost 5 million copies in Britain.
